If you have not read the start of this series, you can access previous parts in my Life Coaching blog box.

Today, my message to you is to drop the façade and be openly YOU … don’t feel you have to constantly try to impress other people … embrace the real you and show your YOUness to the world.

What do I mean?

Do you feel like you have to be a totally different person at work from at home, and perhaps different again around friends and extended family?  When you get home from work or being at an event, are you relieved to peel off the layers and simply be you. I’m not talking about changing clothes into home comfies … I mean consciously feeling different within and relieved to simply be yourself within your own walls … especially when no one is watching. If so …

How’s that working out for you? Ask yourself … who is the real you?  Do you know? … have you checked in with your values and purpose lately?

Being in the business of coaching and mentoring others, this type of fakeness drives me nutso!  I see so many people big-noting and literally lying about their successes, trying to impress people on webpages, Facebook or LinkedIN … exaggerating to try to impress. Sure, I get that this might get you noticed short term … but the wheels fall off when you can’t back it up with substance … or inconsistencies creep in because fakeness is not sustainable long term. I don’t agree with the saying “fake it until you make it” … because it implies that it’s OK to be somewhat dishonest in your ability in the hope that you will quickly gain the skills you said you already had. Problem is … your reputation is on the line.

Lose the ego … it does not serve you well … others will soon see through it. Reputation is like virginity … once you’ve lost it, it’s gone. At the end of the day, you have to look in the mirror, and the person looking back at you knows if you have been honest … whether you are living congruent to your purpose or not … whether you are walking your own path … being the REAL you.

I mentioned my forearm tattoo in a previous blog … it says ‘DARE TO BE ME’.  This has much meaning for me … it is my leadership motto and links to my values around openness and honesty. It stands for:

Deliver Authentic Responses Every time … Truthfully, Openly … [with] Bold Enthusiasm … Model the way, Encourage the heart.

So … My #THREE TIP to BE YOU … Be open, honest and transparent.

Know your values and make sure you align yourself with them … in everything you do.  Be genuine, be authentic, be trustworthy … be YOU.

If you feel you have been trying to impress others… STOP … the time to change that is RIGHT NOW.

DARE TO BE YOU …  Remember: those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter.

Speak Your Mind
